By default, Willow uses the Function (fn) key to start and stop dictation. This key is available on nearly all Mac keyboards and typically isn’t tied to any other actions, making it a smooth and reliable choice.

If you’re unsure where it is: the fn key is usually at the bottom left of your keyboard.

Custom Hotkey Options

You can choose your hotkeys in the Hotkey Binding section. You can add up to four different hotkeys.

If the Function key is not your favorite, or it is already used for something else, you can change it. A common choice is one of the Option or Command keys. Your Mac has two of each, left and right, so pick the one that feels best for you.

Each hotkey can be a single key or a combination. For example, FN + Ctrl, CMD + D, or FN + D. Combination keys need at least one modifier key.

Willow gives you full control over your hotkeys. You can update them anytime in the app’s Settings.

Clearing Conflicts in System Settings

If the fn key (or any other key you choose) isn’t working as expected, it might be tied to another system action.
To check and clear this:

  1. Open System Settings

  2. Go to Keyboard

  3. Look for any shortcuts or special functions assigned to your chosen key

Disable or reassign those to avoid interference
