Dictation Quality or Transcription Failure Problem

Sometimes dictation quality may drop or transcription may fail. This usually comes from a microphone issue or a Wi-Fi issue.

If Your Dictation Failed or Transcribed Incorrectly

If a dictation fails, you may still be able to recover it.

Willow saves recent recordings locally on your device, even if they didn’t finish transcribing.

To try recovering it:

  1. Open your Local Transcript History in Willow.

  2. Look for the most recent unfinished dictation.

  3. Try re-transcribing it to send it again for transcription.
(You may need to try once or twice.)

if reprocessing still doesn't work, you can follow the steps below to retrouble sheet and make sure this issue never happens again

Check Your Microphone

The most common reason is that your Mac has selected the wrong microphone.

  • We recommend using your built-in Mac microphone. It is high quality and works well with Willow.

  • AirPods and AirPods Pro microphones are lower quality. They may turn on without you noticing, especially when switching Bluetooth devices.

  • If this happens, go to your Mac audio settings and make sure the correct microphone is selected.

  • If you are using an external microphone, make sure it is high quality. Low-quality microphones will not pick up your words correctly.

You can select a different microphone in Willow while still using a different sound output. For example, you can use your built-in microphone for input and still use your AirPods for sound output. This will not affect dictation.

Check Your Wi-Fi

Willow requires Wi-Fi to work. Make sure your Wi-Fi is turned on and connected before starting dictation.

Restart Willow

If your microphone is selected correctly and your Wi-Fi is working, try restarting Willow.

  1. Completely close the app (don’t just minimize it).

  2. Reopen the app and try dictation again.

We know it sounds basic, but it often fixes temporary glitches, especially after switching devices, microphones, or network connections.
